Waltham At A Glance
When construction crews were given the green light to build a highway through
Boston's suburbs in the 1950's, the city of Waltham prepared for a second
"industrial revolution" - High Technology. Officially called Route 128, the
Hi-Tech thoroughfare provides easy access to Boston's bedroom communities from
Braintree to Gloucester. Multinational companies such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM,
Polaroid, Raytheon and Arkwright have invested in Waltham. In addition,
Waltham has eight million square feet of office and R&D space, third to Boston
and Cambridge in development.
Paralleling the industrial/commercial growth has been the development of many
residential areas with a variety of housing types, including single family and
apartments. Diversity and opportunity in employment, housing and lifestyles
characterize this modern city.
SCHOOLS/COLLEGES:
Waltham's public school system includes ten elementary, two middle and two high schools. There are two Catholic parochial schools
(K-8), the Gann Academy a Jewish high school and Chauncey Hall-Chapel Hill School (9-13). Brandeis University and Bentley College offer bachelors, masters and doctoral degree-granting curricula.
PUBLIC FACILITIES:
Full-time police and fire protection, trash pick-up, three public libraries,
elderly housing and numerous other services.
MUSEUMS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS:
Charles River Museum of Industry, Gore Place, Lyman Estate (The Vale), The
Paine Estate, The Waltham Museum. The Rose Art Museum and Spingold Theatre at
Brandeis University, the Performing Arts Series and Distinguished Lectures
Series at Bentley College, theatre groups including the Hovey Players and
Reagle Players, Waltham Arts Council, Community Concerts, Waltham Philharmonic Orchestra, Twirlers and Square Dance Club and others.
POPULATION:
1996 U.S. Census 57,214. Doubles every day to over 116,000 as people come
into the city to work and shop.
RECREATIONAL FACILITIES:
The Waltham Boys & Girls Club, the Waltham Division of the YMCA, public
swimming pools, ice and roller skating rinks, boat clubs, baseball and softball
leagues, tennis courts, fitness centers and numerous playgrounds with
supervised summer programs all provide complete recreational facilities to
residents. Also, Prospect Hill is a 250 acre wooded park with great views of the Boston skyline from its hiking trails and picnic areas. Beaver Brook is a state reservation that includes a sprinkler park, picnic areas and hiking trails.

Waltham exits are numbers 26, 27 and 28.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
MBTA mass transit is available to Boston and the surrounding communities of
Cambridge, Watertown, Newton, Lexington and Belmont. Commuter rail service to
Boston and local taxi services are also available.
ORGANIZATIONS:
League of Women Voters, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Moose, Kiwanis, Sons of
Italy, Council On Aging, garden clubs, several veteran's organizations, service
clubs, neighborhood associations and many more serve the community.
